DAWRAI VILLAGE

The village of Dawrai is situated in Asharkandi Union, Jagannathpur thana in the district of Sunamgonj. It is one of the largest villages in Jogannathpur. The area of greater Dawrai is approximately 4 kilometres square in size. It has approximately 7,000 voters on the electoral register. Dawrai is blessed with good road communication links to Sylhet and Sunamgonj via the very busy hub of Goala Bazaar, which is about 10km away.

Since the formation of Bangladesh, the area of greater Dawrai has grown in size and stature. It has made vast strides in recent years to accommodate the needs of its people. Dawrai has 5 primary schools, a high school, a college, 11 mosques and 2 madrassas. In addition there is also a privately operated kindergarten school.

Dawrai Bazaar has also grown to accommodate the needs of local people.  The Asharkandi Union (No. 8) office is located in the bazaar catchment area, and within the bazaar itself there is a land enquiry office (tohfsil), marriage registry office and a post office.  There are several telecom towers that have sprung up to cater for the vast army of mobile and internet users. There is a large market complex adjacent to the Bazaar which houses a bank and a community centre which caters for occasions such as weddings and other private/public gatherings.

The village also houses a government clinic that offers ante-natal and post-natal services as well as all the inoculations that are offered under various government schemes.

The people of greater Dawrai share a common belief that, although they are proud of the vast strides they have made, they will not be complacent.
